'Hockey Night in Canada' announcer Bob Cole dies

For 50 years, Bob Cole was the play-by-play announced for hundreds of NHL games on CBC, the home of Hockey Night in Canada.

TORONTO, ON — When Western New York hockey fans weren't watching the Buffalo Sabres play, they were tuned into Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights.

For 50 years, Bob Cole was the play-by-play announced for hundreds of NHL games on CBC, the home of Hockey Night in Canada.

Sadly, Cole passed away Wednesday night in St. John's, according to CBC

His daughter Megan Cole told CBC that he was surrounded by his family.  "Thank you for decades of love for his work, love of Newfoundland and love of hockey,"  she said to the network.

Like Buffalo Sabres broadcast Rick Jeanneret, cole had many signature phrases, with "Oh baby!" being his most well known.

Cole began his TV career in 1973 with Hockey Night in Canada.  He retired from calling games in 2023.

Cole was 90 years old.
