Habitat for Humanity dedicates first 2 Buffalo houses of new year

Each homeowner has to put in 400 hours of sweat equity into their homes, as well as take financial wellness steps.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The first two Habitat for Humanity houses of 2020 were dedicated on Saturday.

One of those houses was on Kilhoffer Street on the East Side, the other was on Barry Place on the West Side.

The homes are built with volunteers, as well as the families who will now be calling these places home.

Each homeowner has to put in 400 hours of sweat equity into their homes, as well as take financial wellness steps.

Habitat for Humanity says this is just a testament of what the community can do when it comes together.

"We're really responding to the need of the community," said Stephanie Lawson, development and communications manager at Habitat for Humanity Buffalo. "The property values are increasing here in Buffalo as we experience this great renaissance. Our goal is to keep families here in the city and do that affordably, so we're very excited."

Habitat for Humanity's goal is to build 20 houses this year, which would be the most they've ever done.
