Buffalo Police arrest suspect after officers were hit by a vehicle downtown

The incident led to a chase that ended at the corner of Genesee Street and Cayuga Road in Cheektowaga.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police say they've arrested a Cheektowaga man in connection with a vehicle chase that injured three Buffalo Police officers.

Dmitri Ross, 29, is charged with fleeing a police officer, felony reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

The officers he's accused of hitting were investigating a shooting on Chippewa St. near Franklin St. around 2:30 a.m. Sunday where a 28-year-old man from Tonawanda seriously hurt.

Shortly after the shooting, police say a fight involving several people broke out on the street.

As officers were trying to break up the fight, police say a vehicle drove through the crowd and hit three officers.  Fortunately, none of the officers were seriously hurt, but it didn't end there. Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo says the driver then sped away from the scene.

"You can't outrun a radio no matter how fast your car is," Rinaldo said. "A description of the vehicle and its plate was put out. Other officers on routine patrols spotted the vehicle, put that out and that's how the pursuit began."

Officers chased the suspect and the pursuit ended near the corner of Genesee Street and Cayuga Road in Cheektowaga with the car pinned between two Buffalo Police vehicles.

Rinaldo applauded the officers for catching the driver and keeping other people on the road safe.

"When you have somebody that's intentionally attempted to strike officers and their vehicle and they have to be taken off the road as quickly and as safely as possible," said Rinaldo.

At this point, investigators don't believe the driver in the chase was the shooter in that first incident on Chippewa, but they are trying to figure out if and how these cases are connected.
