Amherst Police searching for answers after man found in roadway

Police say the man, identified as Charles R. Durante, 43, of Amherst, died at the hospital.

AMHERST, N.Y. — Amherst Police are looking for witnesses after they were called to a report of a person down in the roadway.

Officers responded just after 6 a.m. Monday to the area of North Bailey Avenue and Grover Cleveland Highway for a man down in the road. Emergency responders rushed him to ECMC.

Police say the man, identified as Charles R. Durante, 43, of Amherst, died at the hospital. Police are currently in that area investigating the source of the Durante's injuries. 

They say he lived in an apartment above the John E. Roberts Funeral Home, which is nearby where he was found. The funeral home lists Durante as a funeral director there.

The funeral home issued this statement:

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Charlie was a special person to us and the community. We’re thankful for the Amherst Police Department's prompt response and are cooperating fully with their investigation. Additional questions should be directed to the Amherst Police Department.” – John E. Roberts Funeral Home

Amherst Police are now awaiting toxicology and autopsy reports.
