Sixty young leaders attend Phillips Lytle conference

They heard from lawyers, including Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who fired them up to be innovators.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sixty young leaders from rural parts of Western New York took advantage of a conference Saturday at Phillips Lytle.

They heard from lawyers, including Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, who fired them up to be innovators.

"I want them to see themselves in the larger framework and not just their own piece of the world," Hochul said. "And that fires them up to get a good education in high school. Will I be a lawyer? It doesn't matter, just step up and be ready to serve in some role."

Added Sandra Langs, a Phillips Lytle attorney: "The path is not often direct. It can be complicated, and that being a leader and being effective takes a lot of different forms."

Phillips Lytle has a program called Peace Out, where they go into middle schools and run trial problems to show students what lawyers do on a daily basis.
