Town of Tonawanda Police looking for suspects who vandalized SWAT van

The vehicle suffered $6,000 in damages while officers assisted Buffalo Police during a night of unrest in the Elmwood Village on May 30.

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Town of Tonawanda Police are hoping to track down the persons responsible for doing thousands of dollars of damage to its SWAT vehicle.

The van was parked on Niagara Street in Buffalo during a night of violent protests on May 30 that started downtown and wound through the Elmwood Village.

The SWAT team made the decision to leave the vehicle in order to head to the nearby 7-11, where four employees had locked themselves in the bathroom to escape the looting going on at the time.

While on their way, police say rocks and bottles were thrown at the officers, including K-9 officer Diehl, who was not hurt.

When they returned to the van they found all of the windows were broken out or shattered and there were several dents on all sides of the vehicle.

The estimate of the damage is $6,000, enough for a felony level criminal mischief charge. Police say they will prosecute.

If you have any information that cold help identify the suspect or suspects, you're asked to please call the department's Confidential Tip Line (716) 879-6606.
