commUNITY spotlight: Marsha McWilson's song pays tribute to her son and the Buffalo 10

Her son was shot to death on her front lawn. Now a grieving mother finds strength in music.

BUFFALO, N.Y. —  The song is called "Gone Too Soon."

Niagara Falls singer Marsha McWilson wrote the song as a tribute to her son who was killed last year. Jaylan McWilson was gunned down in front of the family home.

A 19-year-old has been charged with murder.

"He's a 19-year-old kid with a semi-automatic gun, which is not his fault. That is society's fault, because how can you allow a kid to get their hands on that type of a weapon?" McWilson said.

Music helps the family cope.

"I'm I'm working through my pain. And I know that only time will heal me, so I'm just trying to spend time and let time do what it's got to do," McWilson said.

The song also has another special dedication. It is dedicated to the Buffalo 10 — the 10 people killed in a mass shooting at Tops in May of 2022.

"All those people did was go to the supermarket, and to just be gone in the midst, in a in a minute," she said.
