Wind Warnings cancelled, lakeshore flooding continues

Wind gusts will slowly back off Monday night. High Wind Warnings have been allowed to expire early but Lakeshore Flood Warnings remain in effect.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A spring storm will continue to strengthen but pull away from the Western New York area through Tuesday. In its wake, winds will slowly weaken but much colder air will settle in for the rest of the week.

The High Wind Warnings have expired for the entire region, but scattered gusts up to 45 mph are still possible Monday night.

A Lakeshore Flood Warning does remain in effect from Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning for Niagara, Erie and Chautauqua counties. The watch runs from noon Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. Water levels will rise 3 to 5 feet over current water levels, which are already at historic high levels.

Earlier Monday, wind gusts peaked at 56 mph at the Buffalo Airport, 60 mph at Hamburg and 65 mph at Fredonia. This is the sixth time so far this year that winds have reached at least 50 mph in Buffalo.

Much colder air will be in the area Tuesday and it will stick around all week. Highs will be stuck in the 30s and low 40s for several days. It will be cold enough for scattered rain and snow showers on Wednesday and Thursday but at this point, accumulation is not expected.
