Gov. Hochul extends eviction moratorium

Due to the pandemic, the eviction moratorium will be extended until January 15, 2022.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Hochul announced Tuesday night that she is signing a proclamation to extend the eviction moratorium.

Due to the pandemic, it will be extended until January 15, 2022. The moratorium was supposed to expire at 11:59 Tuesday night.

Hochul said there will be an extraordinary session of the New York State Legislature is set to begin Wednesday, September 1. The session will address New York's rent and eviction crisis and the Open Meetings Law.

"Recently the Supreme Court rendered a heartless decision that blocked the Biden administration's eviction plan. Under my watch, here in the State of New York, we are not going to exacerbate what is already a crisis ... We are not going to abandon our neighbors in need, especially since the State of New York failed in its responsibility to get the money that was allocated by Congress out to the people in need earlier this summer," said Hochul.

Gov. Hochul also said the session will also discuss the state's long-overdue cannabis program.
