One person dead after apartment fire in Amherst

The Amherst Central Alarm Office received a call about an apartment fire at 11 Sunmist Square around 11:46 p.m. Saturday.

AMHERST, N.Y. — One man is dead following an apartment fire in Amherst late Saturday night.

The Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office received a call about a fire at 11 Sunmist Square at 11:46 p.m.

The 911 caller reported that there was smoke in the building and said the door to an apartment was warm with no answer from the resident inside. 

Crews discovered hoarding conditions in the apartment as they tried to put out the fire that was in the kitchen.

Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes and removed the sole occupant from the apartment.

EMS crews attempted life-saving efforts, but the man died at the scene. His name is not being released at this time while family is being notified.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and more details will be shared as they become available. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to call in tips to Amherst Police at (716) 689-1311.
