Retired Buffalo Police officer charged with shooting teen

A 14-year-old was shot when the retired officer allegedly approached a group of people suspected of stealing property from cars.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 65-year-old retired Buffalo Police officer faces a maximum of 25 years in jail if convicted of shooting a 14-year-old.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn's office issued a press release stating that retired officer Antonio Roman had been arraigned late Friday afternoon on an indictment charging him with one count of assault and one count of reckless endangerment.

Buffalo police responded to a call of shots fired early in the morning on February 8. The prosecutor says Roman "allegedly approached a group of individuals suspected of stealing property from vehicles in the parking lot outside the Marine Drive Apartments complex."

The defendant is accused of intentionally shooting a juvenile in the leg with a legally owned handgun.

2 On Your Side covered the shooting on the day it happened. The 14-year-old victim was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Buffalo police say the other people with the juvenile drove away in a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the Town of Amherst.

Erie County Court Judge Sheila DiTullio ordered Roman to be held without bail.  A return to court date has not been scheduled.
