commUNITY spotlight: The NFJC Agents of Change Camp

A Youth Leadership Camp teaches students about diversity & inclusion issues and careers in law enforcement.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Young people from across Western New York had a chance to learn about their peers from different backgrounds.

Desirae Phillips attends high school in Springville. She found the camp to be a great experience. "I think all of us learned about diversity, culture and just accepting each other."

Careers in law enforcement were highlighted at the NFJC Agents of Change Camp.

Students saw the tools used to investigate crime scenes, police dogs and other equipment.

Staff members were encouraged by the response. Kenneth Vargas of the NFJC said "it's so cool to watch the light bulb go off above their head when they make connections and that can happen amongst themselves when they are sitting across from someone that doesn't go to their school that's the beauty."

Student MDd Nafim Khaneaker said "I want to go outside my comfort zone because I was raised in a family where my parents are strict and I just couldn't be social, I am not a social person, so this is a great opportunity to network with people."
