Spring Allergies Delayed but Expected to be an Intense Season

The cooler Spring and consistent rain is making for a delayed start to the warm season allergies, but the allergy season will still pick up soon.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — It's been a slower start to allergy season from the consistent rain and cold this Spring, but it's expected to be an intense allergy season once it gets going.

May so far, is currently ranked at 14th coldest on record and the Spring has a good chance of finishing at top 10 for highest number of wet days, so the allergy season is starting slowly.

Luis Melgar, MD  an Allergist, Southtowns Asthma and Allergy Center:

"This year as you know, it's been a colder wet spring season, so the onset of pollen in the Spring season is a little bit delayed," Luis Melgar, MD who is an Allergist at the Southtowns Asthma and Allergy Center, Catholic Medical Partners, said.  "Pollen count will be a little lower because the wetness will keep the pollen down closer to the ground. Once it stops raining and the sun comes out, then we'll see an increase in pollen counts."

The consistent rain and wet ground will likely mean the allergy season will even be more powerful once it actually begins.  "The rain will not only cause an increase in the pollen count but also in the powerfullness of the pollen... we are going to be expecting a high grass pollen also, come June."

So... be ready for it!
