NOAA to host virtual open house events throughout March

Each virtual visit will include a tour of one of six NOAA facilities and a live Q & A with scientists.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Describing it as a V.I.P. pass, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is hosting six virtual open house events every Wednesday in March. 

In an effort to showcase the variety of careers within STEM fields, the virtual events are geared towards 2nd through 8th graders, classrooms and families. Attendees will be able view NOAA operations in action, being able to ask questions in real time with scientists and featuring live meet and greets with wildlife at various sanctuaries and labs. 

Several open house events will also feature live ASL interpretation. Each event is free, but space is limited with advanced registration required. Below is a short description of each open house with their matching registration. 

1. March 3rd, 4-5 p.m. ET: Featuring the NOAA Fisheries Woods Hole Lab in Massachusetts, visit an active research vessel, aquarium and watch a live dissection. Register here

2. March 10th, 4-5 p.m. ET: Featuring NOAA's Satellite Operations Facility in Maryland, go inside the 24 hour operation of what it takes to monitor satellites in space, satellites meteorologists use to forecast the weather. Register here

3. March 17th, 4-5 p.m. ET: Featuring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in California, meet a resident leatherback turtle and tour various marine habitats. Register here

4. March 24th, 4-5 p.m. ET: Featuring NOAA's Seafood Inspection Laboratory, learn about the steps it takes for fresh seafood to reach your kitchen table. Register here

5. March 30th, 3-4 p.m. ET: Featuring NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Lab in Alaska, take a dive into Alaskan waters with the research team to investigate the impacts of ocean acidification. Register here

6. Bonus! March 31st, 4-5 p.m. ET: Featuring NOAA's Aircraft Operations Center in Florida, take a flight with NOAA pilots and learn about their m daily operations and missions. Register here
