March of 2021 will be one of the least snowiest on record for Buffalo

It would've been one of the driest too if not for the combined inch and a half of rain that fell last Friday & Sunday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — This past March brought some of the mildest and sunniest stretches Buffalo has seen in early springtime in a while. But in doing so, it made this past March drier, possibly one of the warmest, and a top least snowiest on record.

As of March 31st, the current snowfall for this past March is only 0.6 inches. That's a foot behind in snowfall of the climatological norm for March, which has the average snowfall for the month at 12.7 inches. So, with little to no snowfall left for the month, this March will rank as the 5th least snowiest on record for Buffalo.

This March was also on track to be one of the driest on record as well. That was until Buffalo received over an inch and a half of rain combined from Friday, March 26th and Sunday, March 28th. The current rain total for this March stands at 1.77 inches, which is still well below normal for March, but not within the top 10 driest on record.

All this being said, it shouldn't come as a surprise that this March could also rank as one of the top 10 warmest on record too. It'll be close though. As of March 31st, the average temperature for this month, combining the morning low and afternoon high temperatures, stands at 40 degree even. The 10th warmest March on record is 2000 with an average temperature of 40 degrees. Depending on what happens with the high and low temperatures of March 31st, March 2021 could slide into the 10 ten warmest as well.

So for Buffalo, it's easy to see how this part March was warmer and drier than usual. But it looks like April is going to be off to a cold and snowy start.
