Open up your weather app, and you’re greeted by a wealth of forecast data. Radar, hourly temperatures, rainfall chances all at your fingertips. Those rainfall chances are usually presented as a percentage. That percentage is a way for forecasters to not only tell you whether rain is likely but how likely that rain is where you are.

Forecasters refer to those percentages as a “probability of precipitation” forecast. It’s a combination of the forecaster’s confidence that rain will fall and the amount of the forecast region that will actually see rain.

Learn more about how that forecast takes shape in this week’s Heather’s Weather Whys.

New episodes of Heather’s Weather Whys are uploaded to the WGRZ YouTube channel every Wednesday evening at 8:15. Be sure to subscribe to the channel to catch up on past weather topics and to see more content from Channel 2.
