Boating season finally here

The boating season has been a few weeks delayed but it is finally here.

Buffalo, NY -- Memorial Day Weekend is almost here, which is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. But also serves as the unofficial start of summer in Western New York. And after a delayed start to the warm season, boaters are finally getting the season going.

The boating season is finally here and many people are getting their boats ready and in the water this week. More and more boats are going in at marinas around our area including the Erie Basin Marina and at the Rich Marine. "

I've been a sailer all my life and I'm readying my boat the Luna Moth," Joe Roetter said. "I'm busy connecting up the motor, connecting up the fuel lines."

Roetter says he usually get his sailboat in during early May but this year it was delayed from the cold spring start. "Now I'm hoping for a warm, smooth summer with fair winds and smooth seas, and I just can't wait."

The boating forecast looks good enough into the long holiday weekend.

On Lake Erie expecting waves at a foot or less, mostly sunny skies but a few storms possible on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures near 70 F, with the water temperature in the low 50s. Winds SW from 5 to 15 knots.

On Lake Ontario similar conditions are expected but winds will be a little stronger at 10 to 20 knots and cooler in the mid to upper 60s, with the water temperature in the upper 40s.
