Gas prices trending upwards WNY

Prices at the pump are expected to heat up following a January low.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Western New York drivers are expected to slowly see prices increase at the pump after they dipped last month.

According to AAA, average prices in Buffalo are three cents cheaper than they were last week, sitting at $3.33 per gallon.

The New York State average is $3.28, two cents higher from a week ago. Meanwhile, the average price across the country is up four cents at $3.15 per gallon.

AAA Western and Central New York reported gas prices in WNY are as follows:

  • Batavia - $3.24 (down five cents from last Monday)
  • Buffalo - $3.33 (down 3 cents from last Monday)
  • Elmira - $3.06 (up 2 cents from last Monday)
  • Ithaca - $3.21 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Rochester - $3.26 (no change from last Monday)
  • Rome - $3.34 (up 7 cents from last Monday)
  • Syracuse - $3.24 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
  • Watertown - $3.18 (up 3 cents from last Monday)

AAA says gas prices will be on the rise because of normal season increases as well as higher consumer demand for gas. They say that prices at the pump begin to steadily heat up around this time of year and end up peaking around July unless there is a major shock to the global oil market.

Oil and diesel prices are also starting to fluctuate this week. Oil prices range from $72 to $78 per barrel, that's a $6 decrease from last week. The national average price for diesel is up two cents from one week ago at $3.93. Meanwhile, the average price in New York is down one cent but still higher than the national average at $4.39.

If drivers want to conserve fuel, AAA suggests avoiding peak traffic times and combining errands into one trip. You can find more money-saving suggestions on AAA's website.
