Canal Clean Sweep event draws volunteers to Buffalo bike path

Cyclists picked up trash and debris along the Niagara Street bike trail. Volunteers said the path is often littered with glass and debris.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — More than 1,000 people across the state participated in Canal Clean Sweep events in recognition of Earth Day.

One group of volunteers are making a difference on Buffalo's West Side, along the Niagara Street bike trail. Cyclists on Sunday worked to clean up trash and debris along the bike lane.

Volunteers said the path is often littered with glass, which can be dangerous for cyclists.

"I ride this cycle track on a regular basis, and oftentimes there's glass and garbage, and there's actually a lot of people from around the world who come here to ride this cycle track," volunteer Cyd Cox said. "It looks terrible when there's glass and trash around, and we want our city to look great when international and people from around the world come to visit us."

This was one of several cleanup events held along Buffalo's Canalway Trail.
