BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres have traded defenseman Marco Scandella.

The Sabres made the announcement Thursday evening on Twitter. They traded the 29-year-old to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Scandella broke into the NHL in the 2010-11 season with Minnesota. He spent seven seasons with the Wild before joining the Sabres in 2017.

Scandella played all 82 games during his first season in Buffalo, finishing with five goals and 17 assists.

In 2018-19, he played 63 games, scoring seven goals and adding 13 assists.

This season, Scandella had three goals and six assists in 31 games.

Not long after that trade, the Sabres announced that they had acquired Michael Frolik from the Calgary Flames in exchange for that same fourth-round pick they had received in the Scandella trade.

The 31-year-old Frolik has played for the Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and the Flames, where he's been since 2015.

Frolik has 158 goals and 222 assists in 831 career games.

He has five goals and five assists in 38 games this season. Last year Frolik finished with 16 goals and 18 assists in 65 games, and he boasted a plus/minus rating of plus-24.

The two trades within an hour of their scheduled 7 p.m. start with the Edmonton Oilers at KeyBank Center.
