Eagles, Packers will fly into Brazil for Friday night season opener

The last time a Week 1 game was played on a Friday night was on Sept. 18, 1970, when the Los Angeles Rams hosted the St. Louis Cardinals.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — For the first time since 1970, the NFL will play on a Friday night on its opening weekend.

The NFL has announced that the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers will play their Week 1 game in Sao Paulo on Friday, Sept. 6. That game will be the first of five international games in 2024, but the only one not in Europe.

"We're looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in Sao Paulo," Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement.

"We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago, and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth."

The last time a Week 1 game was played on a Friday night was back on Sept. 18, 1970, when the Los Angeles Rams hosted the St. Louis Cardinals.

This game will be played at the Corinthians Arena, which is home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians.

The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Jacksonville Jaguars will host London games next season, and the Carolina Panthers will play in Munich, Germany. Their opponents for that game — as well as the dates and times — will be revealed before the full NFL schedule is released in May.

The Bears and Vikings will both play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. The game in Germany will be held at Allianz Arena, the home of FC Bayern Munich.

Peacock will exclusively stream the Week 1 Eagles-Packers game. It will be available on free broadcast television in the Philadelphia and Green Bay TV markets.

"With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in Sao Paulo will bring an incredible energy, marking a historic moment for our sport internationally," Gerrit Meier, managing director and head of NFL International, said in a statement.
