Niagara women's lacrosse wins conference, secures first NCAA Tournament berth

The Purple Eagles ended Fairfield's five-year MAAC title run with an 11-10 victory in Sunday's championship game.

LEWISTON, N.Y. — For the first time in program history, the Niagara women's lacrosse team reigns atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Purple Eagles captured their first MAAC Tournament title Sunday with an 11-10 over No. 22 Fairfield, ending the Stags' five-year championship run.

With the win, Niagara not only secures its first conference crown, but also punches its first ever ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Sunday's final appearance marked just the second time the Purple Eagles had reached the conference championship game and the first time since 2001.

Trailing by one entering the fourth quarter, Niagara outscored Fairfield 3-1 in the game's final frame to come out on top. Rachel Crane led the way for the Purple Eagles with four goals on the day, and Riley Latray set the MAAC single-season assist record by recording her 60th of the season.

The Purple Eagles will find out their NCAA Tournament draw Sunday night, with the selection show set for 9 p.m.
