Total solar eclipse inspires plunge into dark chocolate

Paula's Donuts, Hanna's Frosty Treats, and Lake Effect Ice Cream are among the local businesses running sweet promotions ahead of the total solar eclipse.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — As the date for the total solar eclipse draws near, more and more local businesses are celebrating the rare event by running some sweet promotions.

Take Paula's Donuts, for example, Paula's began selling special "eclipse" and "galaxy" doughnuts on April 1 and will continue to sell them through April 8, when the eclipse passes through Western New York.

The eclipse doughnut has chocolate icing, topped by an Oreo cream, topped by an Oreo, topped by more chocolate, blocking any view of the ring in the middle. The galaxy doughnut has a creative blue icing.

Hanna's Frosty Treats in North Buffalo is also dipping into the spirit with its total eclipse sundae.

"Just be careful not to look right at it," the ice cream shop said on Facebook.

The sundae itself, as described by Hanna's, is "vanilla soft serve with a chocolate soft serve shadow and caramel sauce corona, plus some peanuts and whipped cream for that little something extra."

And then there's Lake Effect Ice Cream. The scoop shop in Lockport — sorry, they are not available in North Buffalo — is selling eclipse cones for a limited time. They are selling for $3.18, to coincide with when the path of totality will approach the area.

Here's how store owners described the cone: A scoop of butterbeer ice cream on a crunchy sugar cone, with red sprinkles inside, then dropped in chocolate cone dip. The cones are individually packaged, so you don't need to eat them immediately. You can wait until Monday to celebrate the special occasion.
