The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Service prepare inmates for eclipse

The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Service will limit visitation on April 8 due to the eclipse.

NEW YORK STATE, USA — The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has announced that some prisons in the path of totality on the day of the eclipse will have limited to no visitation hours.  

In New York State 23 correctional facilities fall directly within the path of totality, and will experience total darkness. Due to this, some changes will be made for those who visit the facilities. 

Those facilities directly in the path of totality will not have any visitation hours on April 8 and those others outside of the path will only have visitation hours until 2 p.m.

Cancelled visitation will be at the following facilities:

  • Adirondack
  • Albion
  • Altona
  • Attica
  • Auburn
  • Barre Hill
  • Cape Vincent
  • Cayuga
  • Clinton
  • Collins
  • Five Points
  • Franklin
  • Gouverneur
  • Groveland
  • Lakeview Shock
  • Marcy
  • Mid-State
  • Mohawk
  • Orleans
  • Riverview
  • Upstate 
  • Wende
  • Wyoming

"For all facilities in the path of totality, Family Reunion Program (FRP) units should be vacated on Sunday, April 7, 2024. FRP visits may resume at facilities within the path of totality on April 9, 2024. These include facilities that utilize the shared site of an FRP facility in the glide path. FRP units at facilities that are not located in the path of totality must be vacated and FRP visits terminated by noon on Monday, April 8, 2024. Normal operations will resume on April 9, 2024." The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision wrote in a press release.
