BUFFALO, N.Y. — So many have stepped up in the community to help out fallen firefighter Jason Arno's family.
Now a national nonprofit based out of Staten Island is trying to help out his wife and daughter.
Tunnel to Towers Foundation's CEO Frank Siller says his organization is going to either pay off the Arno family's mortgage, pay for a new home, or build them a home.
"To give them that one security, that one thought that they don't have to ever worry about that again in their life, to have a mortgage-free home, I think it gives them some comfort in the most desperate time in their lives, and that's why we let them know right away," Siller said.
Siller says he's waiting to learn what Jason's wife Sarah wishes to do, since she and her young daughter are still grieving. He says no matter what they choose, the foundation is here to help.
Siller started Tunnel to Towers after losing his brother, who was also a firefighter, during 9/11. He says after the grief comes some hard realities.
Usually down the road, families ask themselves how they are going to pay their mortgage with one less income, but it's only part of why the foundation is helping the Arno family.
"That's why we let them know right away, right away so they don't even have to think about that," Siller said. "I just want (Sarah) her to know people care."
All of Buffalo has the opportunity to keep paying it forward to veterans and first responders families across the country.
