Amherst Police warn community of recent scam

Scammers have been reaching out to people via phone call stating that they are an Amherst Police Officer.

AMHERST, N.Y. — The Amherst Police are warning the community of recent parking ticket scams that have been happening.

Scammers have been reaching out to people via phone call stating that they are an Amherst Police Officer and that they have outstanding fines that need to be paid.

Amherst Police want to let people know that this is not something that they would ever do, and calls regarding outstanding parking ticket fines would not be handled over the phone.

Here are tips people should know of in this situation:

  • Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or email
  • Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason
  • Stay private. Regularly update privacy settings for social media sites. Scammers often make their stories more believable by trolling for personal information.
  • Never wire cash or provide debit/credit card numbers to a stranger

People are also encouraged to always call the police department to verify calls.

If anyone has been targeted by the recent scams in Amherst they are asked to call the non-emergency line to file a report at (716)-689-1311
