Police release name of man who drowned in Niagara River

City of Tonawanda Police have released the name of the man who drowned in the Niagara River Sunday.

TONAWANDA, N.Y. - City of Tonawanda Police have released the name of the man who drowned in the Niagara River Sunday.

They say Ahmed Umar, 51, of Lackawanna drowned while jet skiing on the river near Niawanda Park around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

An 8-year-old family member was also on the jet ski and suffered a cut to her foot which did not require hospitalization.

Police initially believed there may have been a collision between two vessels: the jet ski and a nearby boat. However, now they are looking into the possibility that a large wake caused Umar and the child to be thrown from the jet ski and hit by the boat.

Police say the search for Umar is continuing Monday throughout the day.
