WESTERN NEW YORK -- Western New York locations are joining places throughout the country Saturday in an effort to combat the nation's prescription drug addiction epidemic.
The 12th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day allows people to drop off their unused or unwanted prescription medications at one of 4,700 collection sites around the country, according to the Office of U.S. Attorney William Hochul, Jr. The drop-off is free with no-questions asked. They are set up from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday.
Dropping off unused or unwanted medications is important as about 6.4 million Americans 12 and over abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Overdoses have become the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S., above gun and motor-vehicle related incidents, the U.S. Attorney of Western New York says.
Only pills and other solids, such as patches, can be brought to collection sites.
