National Grid handing out dry ice and water to those affected by high wind storm

Dry ice can be used to preserve refrigerator food, and frozen goods when power goes out.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — As many people across WNY experience downed wires, power outages, and damage from the high winds National Grid is stepping up to further help those in need.

More than 25,000 customers have been affected by the weather in WNY with winds in some areas exceeding 70 mph.

The company on Wednesday and Thursday will be distributing dry ice and water bottles in both Dunkirk and Eden from noon to 4 p.m. Locations for the distributions are at

  • Dunkirk Fire Training Center, 665 Brigham Road
  • Grover L. Priess Elementary School, 3000 Schoolview Road

National Grid is handing out dry ice because it can preserve refrigerator food, and frozen goods for when the power goes out. People are advised that when handling dry ice to wear gloves and keep it wrapped tightly in newspaper, paper bags, or towels.

Customers picking up dry ice are also asked to bring a cooler or grocery bag to transport it.
