Frank Mesiah, former president of Buffalo's NAACP, dies at 89

Frank Mesiah, who was president of NAACP's Buffalo chapter, passed away Friday night at age 89.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Frank Mesiah, former NAACP President of the Buffalo chapter, has died. He was 89 years old.

Mesiah passed away Friday night at the Buffalo General Medical Center.

He served as president of the Buffalo chapter for nearly 20 years, before deciding to not seek re-election in December 2016.

"Frank Mesiah was one of the leaders this city will never be able to erase his memory because of the great impact he had — not only on the African-American community — but on the community as a whole," said Rev. Darius Pridgen, president of Buffalo's Common Council. "I truly believe that Buffalo is better because of Frank Mesiah."

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown released the following statement Saturday.

My prayers and condolences are with the family of Frank Mesiah, who served the community for more than two decades as President of the Buffalo NAACP. The positive impact he made on the city of Buffalo will never be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m., at St. John Baptist Church on 184 Goodell Street in Buffalo. Wake hours are 5 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11.
