Now-finished Fenian Monument makes Buffalo debut

The project serves as a tribute to the region's Irish-American history.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A major change was unveiled Friday at Tow Path Park in Buffalo, where local leaders showed off the now-finished Fenian Monument.

Along with the monument, there is also now a new pathway, flagpoles for American, Irish, and Canadian flags, and new lighting.

The project serves as a tribute to the region's Irish-American history. Back in 1866, the Fenian Brotherhood went on a mission to secure Irish independence by taking Canada from Great Britain.

Troy Schinzel, the Erie County Parks commissioner, was there for the ceremony on Friday.

"Quite frankly, things like these accessible playgrounds, that are playgrounds for all, are popping up all over Erie County parks, and this is just the latest one of those," Schinzel said. "There will be another one later this year."

This is an upgrade the cost nearly $100,000 thanks to state funding.
