Day 1 of Kwanzaa celebrated in WNY

Mother Gail Wells was honored for embodying the value of Umoja or unity.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Kwanzaa celebrations continued in WNY Tuesday at Performing Arts High School.

After the opening ceremonies, there was a commemoration for African ancestors an elders procession, and stories told by tradition keepers.

Plus mother Gail Wells was honored for embodying the value of Umoja or unity.

"We need to support our youth and we need to provide them with an understanding of our rich history who we are and where we've come from and we need to encourage them to do their best and seek excellence and to also love who they are and focus on how they can improve the community," said Honoree Gail Wells.

Kwanzaa was first started in 1966 by a civil rights leader in California.

This is the 57th year it has been celebrated in Western New York.
