Buffalo News issues apology for controversial cartoon

The Buffalo News issued an apology weeks after publishing a political cartoon that readers called antisemitic.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo News apologized to the Chabad Center for Jewish Life and other members of the Jewish community after publishing a political cartoon that several people called antisemitic.

The Buffalo News published the official apology saying, "We understand better today why that pain exists, and to those we injured, we apologize."

As 2 On Your Side first reported, the cartoon published in December depicted President Biden uncertain about his actions as the death toll continued to rise in the war in Gaza.

The cartoon included drawings of two Stars of David, a symbol Jews worldwide associate with being Jewish.  The Star of David is also featured on the Israeli flag.

The apology says, "We thought the Star would be understood as representing Israel, but gave insufficient consideration to its broader connotations of culture and ethnicity. In retrospect and after many conversations, we understand that its use in that way could not help but cause significant pain. We didn’t mean to do that, but we did."
