BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you saw people wearing red Friday, there's a very good reason for it.
February 7 is the day for the annual Go Red For Women campaign, reminding people that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women.
Some 43 million women are dealing with it, and the campaign every year raises awareness and money to help research, and to get those women the treatment they need.
"This is something where we need to look out for each other. Be aware. Have that situational awareness that it's not just chest pain," said Shari McDonald, the chief nursing officer at Mercy Hospital. "For women, we carry our stress differently.
"Maybe you're running around and you have a family and you think, 'I'm just tired.' And maybe walking up and down the stairs and saying, 'I'm a little bit short of breath.' Or, 'Gee, I just laid on my left side too long and I've got a little jaw pain.' This is a very preventable disease that we can take control of."
