Boil water order lifted in Fredonia, Pomfret

Health officials had asked residents to boil water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and making coffee until further notice.

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Another boil water order was issued for all Village of Fredonia water customers last week.  It also included those in the Town of Pomfret.

That order was lifted in Sunday.

Chautauqua County officials said the scheduled cleaning of the tank at the water treatment plant "resulted in water with levels of turbidity entering the distribution system" and could contain harmful microbes.

Boiling the water will kill the bacteria and other microbes that might be present in the water.

Health officials had said residents should boil water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and making coffee until further notice. Water must be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and then cooled before use.

Boiled or bottled water can be used to wash dishes by hand, and then allowed to dry completely.

If you use a dishwasher where the temperature reaches 170⁰F  and have a full dry cycle you do not need to boil water ahead of time. The water is safe for laundry.

The Village of Fredonia will collect water samples and test to make sure turbidity levels have fallen on consecutive days.   Once that happens, they can lift the boil water advisory.
