Gov. Cuomo orders flags flown at half staff for limo crash victims

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the limo involved in the fatal crash in upstate New York failed inspection and shouldn't have been on the road.

ALBANY - Flags will fly at half-staff at state government buildings across New York to honor the victims of the limousine crash Saturday in Schoharie that left 20 dead, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.

The flags will remain at half-staff until the victims' burials, according to Cuomo's office.

"The entire family of New York mourns for the lives cut short in this crash," Cuomo said in a statement. "In memory of those who were taken from us, I am directing that flags be lowered to half-staff."

A limousine carrying a group of friends to a birthday gathering at a brewery in Cooperstown ran through an intersection in the rural town of Schoharie and crashed into an unoccupied vehicle, killing the driver, 17 passengers and two bystanders.

It was the country's deadliest transportation crash since 2009.

Among the victims were four sisters — Amy King, Allison King, Mary Dyson and Abigail Jackson — and two brothers, Axel Steenburg and Rich Steenburg.

State Police had not released a full list of victims as of Tuesday afternoon, though most have been identified by family members and friends.

Flags were already scheduled to be at half-staff from Monday through Wednesday to observe National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.

They will remain at half-staff beginning Thursday for the crash victims and remain there until interment.
