Mortal Engines Runs out of Gas

Mortal Engines doesn't live up to its source material.

Mortal Engines is opening this weekend. Apparently, subtlety is not this movie’s strong suit.

I had really high hopes for this film.  They weren’t exactly dashed, but they weren’t really fulfilled, either.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world set centuries after earth was ravaged in something called The Sixty Minute War not only destroyed civilization, but caused entire continents to change position.

How can such great production design and and special effects and acting end up in such a mediocre film?

The film is amazing to look at, the performances are very good, but the plot is only, well, meh.  Mortal Engines is rated PG-13 for sequences of futuristic violence and action.  I love this genre.  I liked the source material … the first novel in a quartet of young adult novels, but Mortal Engines is underpowered and can only rev up to 3 out of 5 boxes of popcorn. It’s a great visualization of a Steampunk future where massive wheeled cities prey on each other. But that’s all it is, just good looking.

If you’re a big fan of the Mortal Engines novels, this is probably something to see, just don’t get your hopes up.

Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse is an animated Spiderman story with interdimensional travel and lots of different Spidermen, and women.  Critics are raving about this latest entry into the Marvel Comics Universe.  It’s Rated PG for frenetic sequences of animated action violence, thematic elements, and mild language. It’s a must-see for Marvel Fans and, of course for Spiderman fans.

the historical comedy-drama (would that make it a dramedy?) The Favourite opens this weekend.

Life at the British Imperial Court in the early 18th century was just a gas.

Anyway, The Favourite has become a critical favorite, what with a great cast led by Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. It’s Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity and language.

And speaking of great casts, Clint Eastwood’s latest film has one.

Eastwood and Bradley Cooper lead a great cast in this story of a 90-year-old drug mule working for the Sinaloa cartel. The Mule is Rated R for language throughout and brief sexuality/nudity.  The critical response has been mixed, but I’ll go see it this weekend ‘cause I’ll go see anything Eastwood does.

So, there you have it.  A couple of family films, a couple adult films and at least 3 good reasons to go to the movies.
