District educates on school safety

West Seneca School District is being proactive when it comes to school safety by educating parents and the community about current protocols.

WEST SENECA, N.Y. - Western New York had two schools evacuated last week due to bomb threats.

Some parents say on top of the school violence nationally they are concerned about their kids' safety in the classroom.

The West Seneca School District is being proactive by starting more conversations on the topic. The district works with the West Seneca Police Department to formulate emergency response plans and has five school resource officers.

"There's your formal structures that you have in place whether it be crisis response teams things like that," said Bystrak, West Seneca School District Superintendent, "having procedures in place where the doors are locked or wearing name badges."

The district holds surprise lock down and lock out drills throughout the year to prepare the district and law enforcement for an emergency situation.

Superintendent Bystrak says when it comes to threats, they must be taken seriously.

"If there is any kind of threat you have to be able to assess that level of threat and I can tell you in any district where something like that happens what ends up happening is there is a good communication between the police department and with the school administration."

The district held a community forum Thursday night at District Office where parents could learn about school safety and share feedback.

"We want them to feel more comfortable with what takes place in the school," said Bystrak, "and to be quite honest with you in many cases you'll get feedback from the community that will help form the decisions that we make."
