Scam alert: National Grid warns residents to be wary of people going door-to-door

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — National Grid is warning consumers to be wary of scam artists after it was notified of people going door-to-door, attempting to steal your personal information.

"National Grid never engages in door-to-door solicitation, and (energy service company) employees are not affiliated with us," the company said in a recent statement.

The company said it does not ask for customer account numbers when visiting a home or calling by phone, so you should be wary if anyone attempts to do so.

Here are some tips to remember if someone approaches your home and says they work for National Grid or another energy service company.

  • Verify the person's name and their company by asking to see their ID. Employees with National Grid and energy service companies "wear visible photo identification cards with a visible logo," the company said. If at any point you doubt the legitimacy of the person you're talking with, National Grid says you should have them wait outside while you call 800-642-4272 to verify their identity.
  • Do not provide your utility account number or a copy of your utility bill unless you are interested in their services and are ready to receive an offer.
  • Do not sign any document until you review its terms, including the length of the agreement, explanation of how rates are calculated, how you can contact their customer service, how you will be billed, and conditions of terminating the agreement.

If you feel as if you're in danger, don't hesitate to stay inside, lock your doors, and call 911.
