Buffalo man pleads guilty in fatal wrong-way crash

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man has pleaded guilty in a fatal wrong-way accident on the I-190 near the Scajaquada Expressway last summer.

Guillermo Morales, 52, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to three counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, one count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree and one count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the First Degree.

Morales  admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol and a drug on August 12, 2023, when he caused a crash on the I-190 near the Scajaquada Expressway in the City of Buffalo.

Investigators say he was driving north in the southbound lane of the I-190 when he crashed his truck head on into another vehicle.  The driver of that vehicle, Matthew J. Czop, 38 of Tonawanda died at the scene. 

Morales was taken to ECMC to be treated for injuries. 

During their investigation, police found Morales in possession of cocaine. 

He faces up to 25 years in prison when he sentenced July 2. He remains held without bail.
