BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown issued a proclamation Friday in recognition of Crime Victims Rights Week.

Mayor Byron Brown was joined by Garnell Whitfield and Common Council member Zeneta Everhart, who were both impacted by the racist 5/14 shooting at Tops on Jefferson Avenue.

"5/14, almost two years ago now, it was a tragic day, and we lost 10 beautiful people from our community," said Everhart, whose son was injured in the shooting. "One of the things that myself and Garnell have done over these last two years is making sure that they're not forgotten."

Whitfield, whose mother was killed in the shooting, added: "We must never forget that crime perpetuated against any of us impacts all of us."

This year's national Crime Victims Rights Week theme is "How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors."
