CORNING, N.Y. — When coming up with a name for your pet, there's endless possibilities.

There's cute, cuddly, and typical names that can be chosen, but what about those that are so unique you might even say wacky?

We have found the 'purrfect' contest just for that.

Nationwide is hosting their annual 'Wacky Pet Names' contest and a cat from Corning, NY is in the running amongst pets from all over the country.

Winners for the contest will be chosen Friday, April 13 based on the general public's votes. There will be winners for each category which are top cat, dog, and exotic pet.

Skullcrusher a mixed domestic shorthair cat, is actually a rather sweet furry friend despite his name his owners say.

His owner Jamie N. said, “His shelter name was Skully, which was cute … but my partner wanted to brainstorm some alternate options. Jokingly, the first thing he said was, ‘Skullcrusher, crusher of skulls!’ and that kind of just stuck. No other names really compared!

“The best part is, he’s the sweetest cat who has never shown an ounce of aggression—so the name is pretty ironic.”

Skullcrusher was actually more of a 'heart-melter' his owners discovered despite the shelter not presenting him as that when they first looked into adopting.

“Unfortunately, he had been in the shelter for over a year, and they’d described him as ‘aloof and unfriendly,’” Jamie says. “When we got him home, we found that he was actually very ‘loof and friendly,’ as my partner likes to say. He’s always beside one of us, purring and showing his belly for pets.”

Along with Skullcrusher other names in the contest include Boots With the Fur, Balsamic Vin, Mumbo Jumbo, Steph Purrrry, Mr. Pizza Puff, and more.

When it comes to naming your pet Nationwide has found that there may even be a science behind it. These are some tips they found for when it comes to naming your pet

  • Use hard consonants and vowels: Pets hear and respond better to names that contain
  • strong sounds.
  • Avoid command-like names: Subtle differences in sounds that resemble common
  • commands can confuse pets.
  • Think about nicknames: For longer names (those with more than one or two syllables),
  • consider a nickname that’s easier for both you and your pet to use daily.
  • Test it out: Before finalizing a name, make sure you feel comfortable saying the name or
  • nickname loudly in public.
