Buffalo Waterfront gearing up for the Summer

The Buffalo Waterfront's summer season will kick off with a big event for the eclipse at the Outer Harbor on April 8th.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Even if they wanted to, the Buffalo Waterfront couldn't have extended ice skating season another day.

Bright sunshine and temperatures in the 50's on Monday were much better suited for a lunchtime walk by the water than anything on a frozen sheet of ice.

"We had another amazing year of the Ice at Canalside," General Manager Lauren Ford said. "It was just a lot of fun this last week, but we are looking ahead to spring and I think everybody's ready to make that transition now."

Ford says the next big event on the calendar is the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th.

"That is going to be our big kickoff for the summer and it's going to be the opening of Terminal B. It's the new event space at the Outer Harbor and we're going to have a big celebration."

Ford says the Outer Harbor will be one of the best places in Buffalo, and the entire country, to view the eclipse.

"We have unobstructed views and we're almost directly on the line of totality," she said. "We'll have a full day of activities for families, we'll have a kids zone, live DJ's, fitness classes, so it's going to be a great way for Buffalo to come together and celebrate this once in a lifetime experience."

Festivities are free and kick off at noon that day.

Ford says post-eclipse, summer activities by the water will kick off in May.

"We'll have a really really exciting concert season this summer," she said. "We're partnering with Town Ballroom, Funtime Presents to bring a really robust concert lineup to the new concert venue."

In the meantime, the boardwalk is always available as a place to soak up an unusually warm day in February or March.

"People are enjoying the weather, beautiful views at Canalside, and then starting in May all of the boardwalk vendors will open," Ford said. "So we encourage people to come back and try Canalside again, to visit if it's your first time. There's something new to explore every season."
