Third Erie County Sheriff's employee tests positive for COVID-19

The newest confirmed case is an employee in the Jail Management Division.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A third Erie County Sheriff's Office employee has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the department.

In a release, the Sheriff's Office said they were notified Thursday night. The unidentified employee is in isolation. They were found to have no contact with inmates and only had contact with one other employee, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Two employees within the Sheriff's Office also tested positive earlier in the week.  A review is now underway to see if any staff or inmates came into close contact with the deputies.

So far, no inmates have been tested for the illness because the Sheriff's Office says they don't meet the threshold for testing under current guidelines.

Sheriff Tim Howard is working to obtain additional personal protective equipment (PPE) for the Division of Correctional Health, Police Services, and the Jail Management Division. Howard says the current inventory is expected to last for a number of weeks; however, it would take just a single incident to change that.
