Cattaraugus County officials warn residents of phone scam

The caller claims to be from a gas and electric company.

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, N.Y. — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office is warning its residents of another phone scam going around.

The Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook saying it has been receiving calls from residents who have been contacted by an individual who claims to be from a gas and electric company. The person says you are eligible to receive a refund for overpayment.

The person will then direct you to following some prompts, which includes giving away your personal information.

The Sheriff's Office says it is warning the public that this is a phone scam and to not give any personal information to anyone over the phone.
