Buffalo, NY — BUFFALO,NY-- According to the USGS a microquake was recorded Friday morning morning near thecenter of Lake Ontario about 35 miles from the shoreline, northeast of Rochester.
The quake registered a 1.5 on the Richter Scale.
Many tiny faults do exist under Lake Ontario and tiny quakes like these are not uncommon.
One thing for sure is that a microquake of this size could not be felt unless you happen to be directly over the epicenter.
Most quakes cannot be felt if they are under a magnitude of 2.5. To put this into perspective a magnitude 2.5 earthquake releases 32 times the energy of a 1.5 earthquake.
