Delayed bloom for cherry blossoms

The Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival is here but the buds on the trees aren't blooming yet.

Buffalo, NY — It is now festival season, and the Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival just started on May 2 and goes through May 6. Organizers are hoping the trees bloom soon, and during the festival.

"The trees right now are budding they are not blooming yet," said Paula Hinz, the co-chair of the Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival.

The blooming of the Cherry Blossoms is delayed, from the cold first half of spring.

"We usually hit a really nice full bloom around the first week in May, we are just a little bit late because we are just budding... probably 6 or 7 days off," Hinz said.

This is much later than last year when all the trees were blooming in mid-April.

"The timing of the Cherry Blossoms is definitely later than last year... we would usually be in a full bloom right now," Hinz said.

But before leaving the garden Wednesday, a couple buds appeared to have just popped, and Hinz says when the trees do all bloom it should be a very good year for it.

"All the buds are out simultaneously so it looks like it's going to be quite a remarkable year... all will bloom at about the same time," Hinz said.

The Cherry Blossom Festival goes through this Sunday, May 6th at the Japanese Garden in Delaware Park, which is right behind the Buffalo History Museum.
