New York Bishops meet with Pope Francis

A report says Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone's resignation is imminent, but the Diocese denies the claim.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — While still in Rome, Buffalo Catholic Bishop Richard Malone has denied Wednesday's reporting via Twitter that the leader of the diocese is about to resign.

Vatican correspondent Christopher Lambe of the London-based Catholic news weekly The Tablet, tweeted Wednesday, "Hearing from reliable sources that Bishop Richard Malone's resignation is imminent."

Two responses Wednesday from diocesan spokeswoman Kathy Spangler did not address the resignation report.

On Thursday, Spangler told 2 On Your Side "the Lamb tweet is false."

Spangler says she has been in frequent contact with Bishop Malone in the last 24 hours and Thursday morning reviewed emails from the Bishop during a brief meeting with Investigative Reporter Steve Brown.

Lamb continues to stick by his story. His statement today to WBFO, "Let's wait and see. Time will tell."

Malone and the other Bishops from New York State met with Pope Francis Friday as a part of the "ad limina" visit to the Vatican.
