Strong winds cause power outages across WNY

The number of power outages in Erie and Niagara Counties dropped significantly Saturday morning.

The number of power outages in Erie and Niagara Counties dropped significantly Saturday morning.

According to National Grid's outage map as of 1 p.m. Saturday, there were fewer than 500 customers without power, mainly in Niagara County.

Around 11 p.m. Friday, there were more than 27,000 customers without power. That number was cut in half by 1 a.m. Saturday.

"Due to the widespread nature of the damage from this high wind event, we will not be able to complete all restorations this evening," National Grid's spokesman said Friday night. "Crews will be working around the clock and customers are encouraged to check our website for updated restoration estimates."
