Winter Weather Advisories extended through Thursday morning

Temperatures in the Northern Tier will be held close to freezing overnight. Areas of drizzle may create a glaze of ice on untreated surfaces.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Winter Weather Advisory has been extended through 8 a.m. Thursday for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee counties. The southern half of the region has warmed into the 40s and advisories have been allowed to expire there.

Areas of light drizzle will move through Western New York Wednesday night. Pavement temperatures are still well below freezing in much of the northern tier and that isn't expected to change. As a result, icy roads and sidewalks are possible through the Thursday morning commute.

In Orleans County, the Sheriff's office has issued a Travel Advisory due to freezing rain and heavy icing conditions.

Ice totals may accumulate two to three tenths of an inch along the Niagara Escarpment. If amounts surpass that, widespread power outages will become a concern as trees and power lines will be significantly weighed down and may topple.

As of 5:30 p.m. about 550 NYSEG customers are without power in Erie and Niagara counties.

Around 300 National Grid customers are without power, mostly in Orleans County.

The rain will come to an end during the Wednesday overnight. Thursday will start dry but look for more rain to develop by the afternoon. By that point, temperatures will have jumped into the 50s for most. Winds will accelerate Thursday night and may gust up to 60 mph.

A High Wind Watch will go into effect late Thursday night through Friday afternoon for Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Erie and Chautauqua Counties. Strong winds could bring down trees and power lines during that time.

Friday cold air moves in, changing the rain back to snow. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s.
